Decoding and Debunking Reading Myths in Second Grade
"Well, about half of your students will leave the second grade as non-readers. That's just a hard fact, and you are going to have to live with it". When this was first posited by a colleague, my immediate reaction was to grab her and shake her by the collar! What do you mean, half? I wanted ALL of my students to leave reading, and reading well! Halfway through this school year, and that remark has already been proven dead wrong. With a multi-modal and multi-sensory approach to language, comprehension, decoding, phonics, and vocabulary instruction, my students have far surpassed any initial goals I had set for them! And yes, I do follow my district curriculum, I just embellish and elaborate often on a few things. Okay, well, quite a few things. One approach that seems to have worked incredibly well in helping my students become more confident in their decoding and encoding abilities takes just 10 minutes a day! It looks something like this: I take a piece of chart paper and divide it into three columns. I choose three word endings that are fairly common and that we will be working on all week, and write one in each column. Then I create word cards that contain those endings- about four for each column. The students take a plain piece of paper and jot down their own mini-version of what I have created. Next, I remind them that knowing chunks in words will help them to read and spell better, and proceed with flashing the cards to them. They write each word under the correct column, and then I call on several students to come up to our chart and place the words correctly. Next, I orally read some more words with those particular chunks in them. The students need to listen carefully, and again, place those words into the correct column. Finally, we all check our work together and decide that yes, we do know these word chunks. The students love it, and I love that it is a quick and easy way to incorporate phonemic awareness and encoding into our routine! Stay tuned for more awesome ideas, and I am always looking for new ideas myself! :) |
